The Rescues- the sum is greater than the parts

When listening to a live set of songs by musicians, there’s always a balance between continuity and variety in order to be coherent but not monotonous. Though too frequently it seems, many musicians move around a few notes and change lyrics but play a number of songs in a row all with the same tempo, same time signature, same instrumentation, and same limited non-distinctive vocals of a single lead singer. Consequently there’s continuity, but no variety, thus the sets, though coherent, are very monotonous or, in other words, BORING. Often it seems as though you’re listening to one drawn out song interrupted by banter about what the next segment of this long drawn out song is supposedly about. During performances like these, often it is easy to lose attention after the first segment or two of such a group or performer’s long drawn out song and performance.
